We both have discussed marriage and I tell her I have no money to buy a wedding ring, I am flat broke. She tells me that is ok she can buy it herself and she will buy my ring too. She says she would be perfectly happy with a dominique ring, a man made diamond, that for all purposes is really a diamond. Even expert jewelers can’t tell the difference between a man made and real diamond. So I told her to go ahead and buy both her ring and my ring herself and next time we see each other I will propose to her. I feel like a bum though not having money to buy the ring. What should I do?

My friend called me up and went on and on about her $390 1 carat diamond engagement ring, only to tell me later that it was man-made. I’m engaged as well, and my fiance and I are planning to go ring shopping soon. My friend insists I get a man-made diamond because of the cost. When I told her I’d really rather it be real and smaller, I think she felt insulted. Anyway, is it really so terrible that I want a real diamond? I would just feel that I would have to constantly explain the fact that it was man-made. My fiance feels the same way. Also, it is my birthstone and I’ve never owned any diamond jewelry. Am I being snobby for wanting it to be real?
